In a move that will give Pfizer the licence to sell Viagra in the UK, a company has been approached by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to supply the impotence drug to Ireland.
A Pfizer spokesman said: "We are in the process of obtaining a supply of the erectile dysfunction drug and will be interested in participating in an initial consultation for potential supply of Viagra in Ireland.
Mr David Mitchell said: "This is an important first step in ensuring that the regulatory authority decides whether to supply Viagra in Ireland."
Mr Mitchell said the MHRA would also give the impotence drug a licence, noting that the drug is currently being marketed in the UK.
The MHRA said Viagra was being marketed by Pfizer and Ireland were the only countries to supply it. However, the product's licence was not forthcoming from the MHRA. The MHRA said Viagra was being sold in Ireland for £11.20 a tablet, while the drug was sold in the UK for £9.99.
In January 2013, the MHRA launched a private consultation to be conducted by the pharmaceutical industry's advisory council.
The consultation will take place in London, while the drug was being sold in the UK for £9.99.
